Our Approach:
Gender Integration Continuum

Source: Unicef
Samya believes that creating equitable, inclusive and nurturing spaces will help all individuals thrive and reach their full potential. At the core of this thinking is our vision to support creation/building of gender equitable work and work spaces/culture through the following 3 approaches
  • Gender Responsive
  • Programming which includes specific action to try and reduce gender inequalities within communities. It means paying attention to the unique needs of females and other gender diverse individuals, valuing their perspectives, respecting their experiences, understanding developmental differences between them and ultimately empowering the marginalized gender identity groups/individuals.

  • Gender Mainstreaming
  • Gender mainstreaming means integrating a gender equality perspective at all stages and levels of policies, programmes and projects. Women and men have different needs and living conditions and circumstances, including unequal access to and control over power, resources, human rights and institutions, including the justice system. The situations of women and men also differ according to country, region, age, ethnic or social origin, or other factors. The aim of gender mainstreaming is to take into account these differences when designing, implementing and evaluating policies, programmes and projects, so that they benefit both women and men and do not increase inequality but enhance gender equality. Gender mainstreaming aims to solve – sometimes hidden – gender inequalities. It is therefore a tool for achieving gender equality.

  • Gender Transformative
  • At their core, transformative approaches address root causes to achieve lasting change. Gender-transformative approaches thus aim to address the structural and social root causes of gender inequality and thereby promote more equitable outcomes for children in all their diversity. In so doing, they aim both to change overall structures that underpin gender inequality and to contribute to lasting change in individuals’ lives. The most popular definition comes from the Inter-agency Working Group for gender equality: A transformative approach promotes gender equality by:

    • fostering critical examination of inequalities and gender roles, norms and dynamics
    • recognizing and strengthening positive norms that support equality and an enabling environment
    • promoting the relative position of women, girls and marginalized groups
transforming the underlying social structures, policies, systems and broadly held social norms that perpetuate and legitimize gender inequalities.

The approaches enable organisations, groups or companies, who might be in various stages of evolution, to set & track progress towards developing a business case for gender equality where profits, planet and people all find equal space.
